In Africa, the winters vary. South of the Equator it's June - August and North of the Equator is December - February. Winters are dry and temperatures cooler except in the Western Cape of South Africa where it's prone to rain. It's the ultimate time to safari and known as 'high season'.
Southern Africa is a subtropical region, moderated by oceans on three sides with warm temperatures that attract visitors at all times of year. Winter offers cooler and drier days and nights with clean clear sky.
|South Africa||Days are really comfortable whilst nights can drop so a jumper is compulsory! Wildlife viewing is fantastic at this time of year in all the usual regions, Greater Kruger region, private reserve Sabi Sand or the Eastern Cape and Madikwe Game Reserve if you prefer malaria free.|
|Botswana||Cooler days and sometimes chilly nights should not stop anyone from visiting Botswana during winter because it's one of the best times to travel. Landscapes hold their lushness after the rains and wildlife numbers swell with the growth of young.|
|Zambia / Zimbabwe||Regions are open throughout both countries and this truly is a great time to go because landscapes are at their best, photographer's dream and wildlife is healthy. The ultimate canoeing safaris are here in Lower Zambezi, Zambia and Mana Pools, Zimbabwe. Zambia is also home to the ultimate walking safari in South Luangwa National Park.|
|Malawi||Lake Malawi region is looking breathtakingly beautiful. Rains have ceased, landscapes greened, days cooled and sky cleared. We highly recommend Lake Malawi and somewhere like Kaya Mawa as a 'beach' style finale to your safari. Direct flights from Mfuwe in Zambia mean it's a great bush and beach combination (Zambia and Malawi).|
One of the best seasons to travel is June - August, particularly in Tanzania as the weather heralds warmth, clear skies and movement of the migration.
|Tanzania||June to August is a great time to see the migration in Tanzania because the herds are forced up into the far north of the Serengeti in the quest of healthy grasses. They cross the Grumeti River and then move to the border and start to spill over into the Masai Mara (usually September). Tarangire National Park is stunning with migrating herds arriving and large concentrations of elephant, buffalo, zebra and antelope.|
|Congo||The best time to visit Congo is during the dry spell, traditionally June to August but more like May onwards. The weather is cool and dry and wildlife is looking healthy and abundant.|
|Uganda Rwanda||The rainy season has gone and the wilderness areas are lush with teeming wildlife. Gorilla trekking and chimp trekking becomes easier and white water rafting in Uganda on the Nile is thrilling.|
